Surah Yusuf — Ayah 84 (12:84)
English translation (Saheeh International)
And he turned away from them and said, "Oh, my sorrow over Joseph," and his eyes became white1 from grief, for he was [of that] a suppressor.2
- i.e., he lost his sight.
- He did not express the extent of his grief or his anger at what he suspected his sons had done but was patient, depending only upon Allāh for help.
Brief commentary
He pulled away, turning from them, saying, ‘O my grief for Joseph!’ The blackness of his eyes had become white out of his great mourning for him, because he was filled with grief and sorrow, yet hiding his grief from the people.
