Surah As-Saffat — Ayah 141 (37:141)

English translation (Saheeh International)

And he drew lots¹ and was among the losers.

1. - To determine who would be cast overboard in order to save the other passengers. Having been overloaded, the ship was on the verge of sinking.

Brief commentary

The ship was close to sinking because of its load, so the passengers drew lots to throw some of them overboard, fearing its sinking because of too many passengers. Jonah was one of the names that were drawn, and so they threw him in to the sea.
