About this surah

Name

The name is derived from the word was saaffat with which the Surah begins.

Period of Revelation

The subject matter and the style show that this Surah probably was sent down in the middle of the Makkan period, or perhaps in the last stage of the middle Makkan period. The style clearly indicates that antagonism is raging strong in the background and the Holy Prophet and his Companions are passing through very difficult and discouraging circumstances.

Subject Matter and Theme

The disbelievers of Makkah have been severely warned for their attitude of mockery and derision with which they were responding to the Holy Prophet's message of Tauhid and the Hereafter and for their utter refusal to accept and acknowledge his claim to Prophethood. In the end, they have been plainly warned that the Prophet whom they are mocking and ridiculing will overwhelm them in spite of their power and self and they will find the army of Allah encamping in the very courtyards of their houses (vv. 171-179. This notice was given at a time when there appeared no chance whatever of the Holy Prophet's success and triumph. The Muslims (who have been called Allah's army in these verses) were being made the target of severe persecution. Three- fourth of their population had already emigrated and hardly 40 to 50 of the Companions were left with the Holy Prophet in Makkah who were experiencing all sorts of the excesses with utter helplessness. Under such circumstances, in view of the apparent conditions, no one could believe that the Holy Prophet and the handful of his ill equipped Companions would ultimately attain dominance. The people rather thought that the new movement would end and be buried in the ravines of Makkah. But hardly 15 to 16 years had passed when on the conquest of Makkah precisely the same thing happened of which the disbelievers had been forewarned.

Along with administering warnings, Allah in this Surah has done full justice also to the theme of inducement and instruction in a balanced way. Brief but impressive arguments have been given about the validity of the doctrines of Tauhid and the Hereafter. Criticism has been made of the creed of the mushrikin to show the absurdity of their beliefs; they have been informed of the evil consequences of their deviations, which have been contrasted with the splendid results of the faith and righteous acts. Then, in continuation of the same, Precedents from past history have been cited to show how Allah had been treating His Prophets and their followers : how He has been favoring His faithful servants and punishing their deniers and rejectors.

The most instructive of the historical narratives presented in this Surah is the important event of the pious life of the Prophet Abraham, who became ready to sacrifice his only son as soon as he received an inspiration from Allah. In this there was a lesson not only for the disbelieving Quraish, who waxed proud of their blood relationship with him, but also for the Muslims who had believed in Allah and His Messenger. By narrating this event they were told what is the essence and the real spirit of Islam, and how a true believer should be ready to sacrifice his all for the pleasure and approval of Allah after he has adopted it as his Faith and Creed.

The last verses of the Surah were not only a warning for the disbelievers but also a good news for the believers who were passing through highly unfavorable and discouraging conditions on account of their supporting and following the Holy Prophet. In these verses they were given the good news that they should not be disheartened at the hardships and difficulties they had to encounter in the beginning, for in the end they alone would attain dominance, and the standard bearers of falsehood, who appeared to be dominant at the time would be overwhelmed and vanquished at their hands. A few years later the turn the events took, proved that it was not an empty consolation but an inevitable reality of which they had been foretold in order to strengthen their hearts.

By those [angels] lined up in rows

And those who drive [the clouds]

As-Saffat 37:3Ayah page →

And those who recite the message,1

As-Saffat 37:4Ayah page →

Indeed, your God is One,

As-Saffat 37:5Ayah page →

Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them and Lord of the sunrises.1

As-Saffat 37:6Ayah page →

Indeed, We have adorned the nearest heaven with an adornment of stars

As-Saffat 37:7Ayah page →

And as protection against every rebellious devil

[So] they may not listen to the exalted assembly [of angels] and are pelted from every side,1

As-Saffat 37:9Ayah page →

Repelled; and for them is a constant punishment,

As-Saffat 37:10Ayah page →

Except one who snatches [some words] by theft, but they are pursued by a burning flame, piercing [in brightness].

As-Saffat 37:11Ayah page →

Then inquire of them, [O Muḥammad], "Are they a stronger [or more difficult] creation or those [others] We have created?" Indeed, We created them [i.e., men] from sticky clay.

As-Saffat 37:12Ayah page →

But you wonder, while they mock,

As-Saffat 37:13Ayah page →

And when they are reminded, they remember not.

As-Saffat 37:14Ayah page →

And when they see a sign, they ridicule.

As-Saffat 37:15Ayah page →

And say, "This is not but obvious magic.

As-Saffat 37:16Ayah page →

When we have died and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?

As-Saffat 37:17Ayah page →

And our forefathers [as well]?"

As-Saffat 37:18Ayah page →

Say, "Yes, and you will be [rendered] contemptible."

As-Saffat 37:19Ayah page →

It will be only one shout, and at once they will be observing.

As-Saffat 37:20Ayah page →

They will say, "O woe to us! This is the Day of Recompense."

As-Saffat 37:21Ayah page →

[They will be told], "This is the Day of Judgement which you used to deny."

As-Saffat 37:22Ayah page →

[The angels will be ordered], "Gather those who committed wrong, their kinds,1 and what they used to worship

As-Saffat 37:23Ayah page →

Other than Allāh, and guide them to the path of Hellfire

As-Saffat 37:24Ayah page →

And stop them; indeed, they are to be questioned."

As-Saffat 37:25Ayah page →

[They will be asked], "What is [wrong] with you? Why do you not help each other?"

As-Saffat 37:26Ayah page →

But they, that Day, are in surrender.

As-Saffat 37:27Ayah page →

And they will approach one another asking [i.e., blaming] each other.

As-Saffat 37:28Ayah page →

They will say, "Indeed, you used to come at us from the right."1

As-Saffat 37:29Ayah page →

They [i.e., the oppressors] will say, "Rather, you [yourselves] were not believers,

As-Saffat 37:30Ayah page →

And we had over you no authority, but you were a transgressing people.

As-Saffat 37:31Ayah page →

So the word [i.e., decree] of our Lord has come into effect upon us; indeed, we will taste [punishment].

As-Saffat 37:32Ayah page →

And we led you to deviation; indeed, we were deviators."

As-Saffat 37:33Ayah page →

So indeed they, that Day, will be sharing in the punishment.

As-Saffat 37:34Ayah page →

Indeed, that is how We deal with the criminals.

As-Saffat 37:35Ayah page →

Indeed they, when it was said to them, "There is no deity but Allāh," were arrogant

As-Saffat 37:36Ayah page →

And were saying, "Are we to leave our gods for a mad poet?"

As-Saffat 37:37Ayah page →

Rather, he [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ)] has come with the truth and confirmed the [previous] messengers.

As-Saffat 37:38Ayah page →

Indeed, you [disbelievers] will be tasters of the painful punishment,

As-Saffat 37:39Ayah page →

And you will not be recompensed except for what you used to do -

As-Saffat 37:40Ayah page →

But not the chosen servants of Allāh.

As-Saffat 37:41Ayah page →

Those will have a provision determined -

As-Saffat 37:42Ayah page →

Fruits;1 and they will be honored

As-Saffat 37:43Ayah page →

In gardens of pleasure

As-Saffat 37:44Ayah page →

On thrones facing one another.

As-Saffat 37:45Ayah page →

There will be circulated among them a cup [of wine] from a flowing spring,

As-Saffat 37:46Ayah page →

White and delicious to the drinkers;

As-Saffat 37:47Ayah page →

No bad effect is there in it, nor from it will they be intoxicated.

As-Saffat 37:48Ayah page →

And with them will be women limiting [their] glances,1 with large, [beautiful] eyes,

As-Saffat 37:49Ayah page →

As if they were [delicate] eggs, well-protected.

As-Saffat 37:50Ayah page →

And they will approach one another, inquiring of each other.

As-Saffat 37:51Ayah page →

A speaker among them will say, "Indeed, I had a companion [on earth].

As-Saffat 37:52Ayah page →

Who would say, 'Are you indeed of those who believe

As-Saffat 37:53Ayah page →

That when we have died and become dust and bones, we will indeed be recompensed?'"

As-Saffat 37:54Ayah page →

He will say,1 "Would you [care to] look?"

As-Saffat 37:55Ayah page →

And he will look and see him1 in the midst of the Hellfire.

As-Saffat 37:56Ayah page →

He will say, "By Allāh, you almost ruined me.

As-Saffat 37:57Ayah page →

If not for the favor of my Lord, I would have been of those brought in [to Hell].

As-Saffat 37:58Ayah page →

Then, are we not to die

As-Saffat 37:59Ayah page →

Except for our first death, and we will not be punished?"

As-Saffat 37:60Ayah page →

Indeed, this is the great attainment.

As-Saffat 37:61Ayah page →

For the like of this let the workers [on earth] work.

As-Saffat 37:62Ayah page →

Is that [i.e., Paradise] a better accommodation or the tree of zaqqūm?

As-Saffat 37:63Ayah page →

Indeed, We have made it a torment for the wrongdoers.

As-Saffat 37:64Ayah page →

Indeed, it is a tree issuing from the bottom of the Hellfire,

As-Saffat 37:65Ayah page →

Its emerging fruit as if it was heads of the devils.

As-Saffat 37:66Ayah page →

And indeed, they will eat from it and fill with it their bellies.

As-Saffat 37:67Ayah page →

Then indeed, they will have after it a mixture of scalding water.

As-Saffat 37:68Ayah page →

Then indeed, their return will be to the Hellfire.

As-Saffat 37:69Ayah page →

Indeed they found their fathers astray.

As-Saffat 37:70Ayah page →

So they hastened [to follow] in their footsteps.

As-Saffat 37:71Ayah page →

And there had already strayed before them most of the former peoples,

As-Saffat 37:72Ayah page →

And We had already sent among them warners.

As-Saffat 37:73Ayah page →

Then look how was the end of those who were warned -

As-Saffat 37:74Ayah page →

But not the chosen servants of Allāh.

As-Saffat 37:75Ayah page →

And Noah had certainly called Us, and [We are] the best of responders.

As-Saffat 37:76Ayah page →

And We saved him and his family from the great affliction.

As-Saffat 37:77Ayah page →

And We made his descendants those remaining [on the earth]

As-Saffat 37:78Ayah page →

And left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:

As-Saffat 37:79Ayah page →

"Peace upon Noah among the worlds."

As-Saffat 37:80Ayah page →

Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

As-Saffat 37:81Ayah page →

Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.

As-Saffat 37:82Ayah page →

Then We drowned the others [i.e., disbelievers].

As-Saffat 37:83Ayah page →

And indeed, among his kind was Abraham,

As-Saffat 37:84Ayah page →

When he came to his Lord with a sound heart

As-Saffat 37:85Ayah page →

[And] when he said to his father and his people, "What do you worship?

As-Saffat 37:86Ayah page →

Is it falsehood [as] gods other than Allāh you desire?

As-Saffat 37:87Ayah page →

Then what is your thought about the Lord of the worlds?"

As-Saffat 37:88Ayah page →

And he cast a look at the stars

As-Saffat 37:89Ayah page →

And said, "Indeed, I am [about to be] ill."

As-Saffat 37:90Ayah page →

So they turned away from him, departing.

As-Saffat 37:91Ayah page →

Then he turned to their gods and said, "Do you not eat?1

As-Saffat 37:92Ayah page →

What is [wrong] with you that you do not speak?"

As-Saffat 37:93Ayah page →

And he turned upon them a blow with [his] right hand.

As-Saffat 37:94Ayah page →

Then they [i.e., the people] came toward him, hastening.

As-Saffat 37:95Ayah page →

He said, "Do you worship that which you [yourselves] carve,

As-Saffat 37:96Ayah page →

While Allāh created you and that which you do?"

As-Saffat 37:97Ayah page →

They said, "Construct for him a structure [i.e., furnace] and throw him into the burning fire."

As-Saffat 37:98Ayah page →

And they intended for him a plan [i.e., harm], but We made them the most debased.

As-Saffat 37:99Ayah page →

And [then] he said, "Indeed, I will go to [where I am ordered by] my Lord; He will guide me.

As-Saffat 37:100Ayah page →

My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous."

As-Saffat 37:101Ayah page →

So We gave him good tidings of a forbearing boy.

As-Saffat 37:102Ayah page →

And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion,1 he said, "O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think." He said, "O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allāh wills, of the steadfast."

As-Saffat 37:103Ayah page →

And when they had both submitted1 and he put him down upon his forehead,

As-Saffat 37:104Ayah page →

We called to him, "O Abraham,

As-Saffat 37:105Ayah page →

You have fulfilled the vision." Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

As-Saffat 37:106Ayah page →

Indeed, this was the clear trial.

As-Saffat 37:107Ayah page →

And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice,1

As-Saffat 37:108Ayah page →

And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:

As-Saffat 37:109Ayah page →

"Peace upon Abraham."

As-Saffat 37:110Ayah page →

Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

As-Saffat 37:111Ayah page →

Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.

As-Saffat 37:112Ayah page →

And We gave him good tidings of Isaac, a prophet from among the righteous.1

As-Saffat 37:113Ayah page →

And We blessed him and Isaac. But among their descendants is the doer of good and the clearly unjust to himself [i.e., sinner].

As-Saffat 37:114Ayah page →

And We did certainly confer favor upon Moses and Aaron.

As-Saffat 37:115Ayah page →

And We saved them and their people from the great affliction,

As-Saffat 37:116Ayah page →

And We supported them so it was they who overcame.

As-Saffat 37:117Ayah page →

And We gave them the explicit Scripture [i.e., the Torah],

As-Saffat 37:118Ayah page →

And We guided them on the straight path.

As-Saffat 37:119Ayah page →

And We left for them [favorable mention] among later generations:

As-Saffat 37:120Ayah page →

"Peace upon Moses and Aaron."

As-Saffat 37:121Ayah page →

Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

As-Saffat 37:122Ayah page →

Indeed, they were of Our believing servants.

As-Saffat 37:123Ayah page →

And indeed, Elias was from among the messengers,

As-Saffat 37:124Ayah page →

When he said to his people, "Will you not fear Allāh?

As-Saffat 37:125Ayah page →

Do you call upon Baʿl1 and leave the best of creators -

As-Saffat 37:126Ayah page →

Allāh, your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers?"

As-Saffat 37:127Ayah page →

And they denied him, so indeed, they will be brought [for punishment],

As-Saffat 37:128Ayah page →

Except the chosen servants of Allāh.

As-Saffat 37:129Ayah page →

And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:

As-Saffat 37:130Ayah page →

"Peace upon Elias."1

As-Saffat 37:131Ayah page →

Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

As-Saffat 37:132Ayah page →

Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.

As-Saffat 37:133Ayah page →

And indeed, Lot was among the messengers.

As-Saffat 37:134Ayah page →

[So mention] when We saved him and his family, all,

As-Saffat 37:135Ayah page →

Except an old woman [i.e., his wife] among those who remained [with the evildoers].

As-Saffat 37:136Ayah page →

Then We destroyed the others.

As-Saffat 37:137Ayah page →

And indeed, you pass by them in the morning

As-Saffat 37:138Ayah page →

And at night. Then will you not use reason?

As-Saffat 37:139Ayah page →

And indeed, Jonah was among the messengers.

As-Saffat 37:140Ayah page →

[Mention] when he ran away to the laden ship.

As-Saffat 37:141Ayah page →

And he drew lots1 and was among the losers.

As-Saffat 37:142Ayah page →

Then the fish swallowed him, while he was blameworthy.1

As-Saffat 37:143Ayah page →

And had he not been of those who exalt Allāh,

As-Saffat 37:144Ayah page →

He would have remained inside its belly until the Day they are resurrected.1

As-Saffat 37:145Ayah page →

But We threw him onto the open shore while he was ill.

As-Saffat 37:146Ayah page →

And We caused to grow over him a gourd vine.1

As-Saffat 37:147Ayah page →

And We sent him1 to [his people of] a hundred thousand or more.

As-Saffat 37:148Ayah page →

And they believed, so We gave them enjoyment [of life] for a time.

As-Saffat 37:149Ayah page →

So inquire of them, [O Muḥammad], "Does your Lord have daughters while they have sons?1

As-Saffat 37:150Ayah page →

Or did We create the angels as females while they were witnesses?"

As-Saffat 37:151Ayah page →

Unquestionably, it is out of their [invented] falsehood that they say,

As-Saffat 37:152Ayah page →

"Allāh has begotten," and indeed, they are liars.

As-Saffat 37:153Ayah page →

Has He chosen daughters over sons?

As-Saffat 37:154Ayah page →

What is [wrong] with you? How do you make judgement?

As-Saffat 37:155Ayah page →

Then will you not be reminded?

As-Saffat 37:156Ayah page →

Or do you have a clear authority?1

As-Saffat 37:157Ayah page →

Then produce your scripture, if you should be truthful.

As-Saffat 37:158Ayah page →

And they have made [i.e., claimed] between Him and the jinn a lineage, but the jinn have already known that they [who made such claims] will be brought [to punishment].

As-Saffat 37:159Ayah page →

Exalted is Allāh above what they describe,

As-Saffat 37:160Ayah page →

Except the chosen servants of Allāh [who do not share in that sin].

As-Saffat 37:161Ayah page →

So indeed, you [disbelievers] and whatever you worship,

As-Saffat 37:162Ayah page →

You cannot tempt [anyone] away from Him

As-Saffat 37:163Ayah page →

Except he who is to [enter and] burn in the Hellfire.1

As-Saffat 37:164Ayah page →

[The angels say],1 "There is not among us any except that he has a known position.2

As-Saffat 37:165Ayah page →

And indeed, we are those who line up [for prayer].

As-Saffat 37:166Ayah page →

And indeed, we are those who exalt Allāh."

As-Saffat 37:167Ayah page →

And indeed, they [i.e., the disbelievers] used to say,1

As-Saffat 37:168Ayah page →

"If we had a message from [those of] the former peoples,

As-Saffat 37:169Ayah page →

We would have been the chosen servants of Allāh."

As-Saffat 37:170Ayah page →

But they disbelieved in it,1 so they are going to know.

As-Saffat 37:171Ayah page →

And Our word [i.e., decree] has already preceded for Our servants, the messengers,

As-Saffat 37:172Ayah page →

[That] indeed, they would be those given victory

As-Saffat 37:173Ayah page →

And [that] indeed, Our soldiers [i.e., the believers] will be those who overcome.1

As-Saffat 37:174Ayah page →

So, [O Muḥammad], leave them for a time.

As-Saffat 37:175Ayah page →

And see [what will befall] them, for they are going to see.

As-Saffat 37:176Ayah page →

Then for Our punishment are they impatient?

As-Saffat 37:177Ayah page →

But when it descends in their territory, then evil is the morning of those who were warned.

As-Saffat 37:178Ayah page →

And leave them for a time.

As-Saffat 37:179Ayah page →

And see, for they are going to see.

As-Saffat 37:180Ayah page →

Exalted is your Lord, the Lord of might, above what they describe.

As-Saffat 37:181Ayah page →

And peace upon the messengers.

As-Saffat 37:182Ayah page →

And praise to Allāh, Lord of the worlds.
