About this surah

Name

The Surah takes its name from verse 224 in which the word Ash-Shu\`araa' occurs.

Period of Revelation

The subject matter and the style show, and the traditions confirms, that it was revealed during the middle Makkan period. According to Ibn Abbas, Surah Ta Ha was revealed first, then Surah Al Waqiah, and then Surah Ash-Shu'araa.(Ruh-ul-Ma'ani, Vol. xx, p. 64). About Surah Ta Ha it is well known that it had been revealed before Hadrat Umar embraced Islam.

Subject Matter and Topics

The background of the Surah is that the disbelievers of Makkah were persistently refusing on various pretexts to reject the message of Islam given by the Holy Prophet. They would argue that he did not show them any signs to convince them of his Prophethood. Furthermore, they would characterize him as a poet or a sorcerer and mock his message, while ridiculing his Mission, and expressing that his followers were either a few foolish youth, salves or the poor people of Makkah, whereas, they argued, if his Mission had really some value then, the nobles and the elders would have accepted it first. The Holy Prophet was becoming wearied by his efforts to show them rationally the errors of their creeds and prove the truth of the Doctrines of Tauhid and the Hereafter, while the disbelievers were unyielding and rejected his advancements . This state of affairs was causing great anguish and grief to the Holy Prophet.

Such were the conditions under which this Surah was revealed. It begins with words of consolation to the Holy Prophet, implying, "Why do you fret for their sake?If these people have not believed in you, it is not because they have not seen any Sign, but because they are obdurate. They will not listen to reason as they want to see a Sign which makes them bow their heads in humility. When this Sign was shown in due course, they will themselves realize that what was being presented to them was the Truth."

After this introduction, till verse 191, the same theme has been presented continuously, and it is said: "The whole earth abounds in such Signs as can guide a seeker after truth to Reality, but the stubborn and misguided have never believed even after seeing the Signs, whether these were the Signs of the natural phenomena or the miracles of the Prophets. These wretched people have stubbornly adhered to their erroneous creeds till the Divine scourge actually overtook them." It is to illustrate this that the history of seven of the ancient tribes has been told, who persisted in disbelief just like the disbelievers of Makkah. In this connection, the following points have been stressed:

  1. The Signs are of two kinds:(a) Those visible signs presented in front of our eyes, that by seeing them an intelligent humble person can judge for themselves whether the message the Prophet is presenting is the Truth and (b) those which were seen by arrogant and haughty people of the Pharaoh, Noah, Ad, Thamud, Lot and Aiykah. Now it is for the disbelievers to decide which kind of the Signs they are eager to see.
  2. The mentality of the disbeliever has been the same throughout the ages; their arguments and objections, their excuses and subterfuges for not believing have been similar and ultimately the fates that they met have also been the same. Likewise, the Prophets in every age presented the same messages, their personal character, reasoning and arguments against their opponents were the same, and they were all similarly blessed with mercy of Allah Almighty. Both these patterns of behavior and conduct are found in history, and the disbelievers could themselves see as to which respective patterns they and the Holy Prophet belonged.
  3. Allah is All Mighty, All Powerful and All Merciful. History contains instances of His Wrath as well as of His Mercy. Now, therefore, it is for the people to decide whether they would like to deserve Allah's Mercy or His Wrath.
  4. Lastly, the discussion has been summed up, saying "O disbelievers, if at all you want to see the Signs, why should you insist on seeing those horrible Signs that visited the doomed communities of the past? Why don't you see the Qur'an which is being presented in your own language? Why don't you see Muhammad (upon whom be Allah's peace and mercy) and his Companions? Can the revelations of the Qur'an be the work of a shaytan or a jinn? Does the recipient of the Qur'an appear to be a sorcerer? Are Muhammad and his Companions no different from a poet and his admirers? Why don't you give up disbelief and search your hearts for their judgment? When in your hearts you yourselves believe that the Revelations of the Qur'an have nothing in common with sorcery and poetry, then you should know that you are being cruel and unjust, and will certainly meet the doom meant for the cruel and unjust."

Perhaps, [O Muḥammad], you would kill yourself with grief that they will not be believers.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:4Ayah page →

If We willed, We could send down to them from the sky a sign for which their necks would remain humbled.1

Ash-Shu'ara 26:5Ayah page →

And no mention [i.e., revelation] comes to them anew from the Most Merciful except that they turn away from it.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:6Ayah page →

For they have already denied, but there will come to them the news of that which they used to ridicule.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:7Ayah page →

Did they not look at the earth - how much We have produced therein from every noble kind?

Ash-Shu'ara 26:8Ayah page →

Ash-Shu'ara 26:14Ayah page →

And they have upon me a [claim due to] sin, so I fear that they will kill me."

Ash-Shu'ara 26:15Ayah page →

[Allāh] said, "No. Go both of you with Our signs; indeed, We are with you, listening.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:16Ayah page →

Go to Pharaoh and say, 'We are the messengers1 of the Lord of the worlds,

Ash-Shu'ara 26:17Ayah page →

[Commanded to say], "Send with us the Children of Israel."'"

Ash-Shu'ara 26:18Ayah page →

[Pharaoh] said, "Did we not raise you among us as a child, and you remained among us for years of your life?

Ash-Shu'ara 26:19Ayah page →

And [then] you did your deed which you did,1 and you were of the ungrateful."

Ash-Shu'ara 26:20Ayah page →

[Moses] said, "I did it, then, while I was of those astray [i.e., ignorant].

Ash-Shu'ara 26:21Ayah page →

So I fled from you when I feared you. Then my Lord granted me judgement [i.e., wisdom and prophethood] and appointed me [as one] of the messengers.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:22Ayah page →

And is this a favor of which you remind me - that you have enslaved the Children of Israel?"

Ash-Shu'ara 26:23Ayah page →

Said Pharaoh, "And what is the Lord of the worlds?"

Ash-Shu'ara 26:24Ayah page →

[Moses] said, "The Lord of the heavens and earth and that between them, if you should be convinced."

Ash-Shu'ara 26:25Ayah page →

[Pharaoh] said to those around him, "Do you not hear?"

Ash-Shu'ara 26:26Ayah page →

[Moses] said, "Your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers."

Ash-Shu'ara 26:27Ayah page →

[Pharaoh] said,1 "Indeed, your 'messenger' who has been sent to you is mad."

Ash-Shu'ara 26:28Ayah page →

[Moses] said, "Lord of the east and the west and that between them, if you were to reason."

Ash-Shu'ara 26:29Ayah page →

[Pharaoh] said, "If you take a god other than me, I will surely place you among those imprisoned."

Ash-Shu'ara 26:30Ayah page →

[Moses] said, "Even if I brought you something [i.e., proof] manifest?"

Ash-Shu'ara 26:31Ayah page →

[Pharaoh] said, "Then bring it, if you should be of the truthful."

Ash-Shu'ara 26:32Ayah page →

So [Moses] threw his staff, and suddenly it was a serpent manifest.1

Ash-Shu'ara 26:33Ayah page →

And he drew out his hand; thereupon it was white for the observers.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:34Ayah page →

[Pharaoh] said to the eminent ones around him, "Indeed, this is a learned magician.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:35Ayah page →

He wants to drive you out of your land by his magic, so what do you advise?"

Ash-Shu'ara 26:36Ayah page →

They said, "Postpone [the matter of] him and his brother and send among the cities gatherers

Ash-Shu'ara 26:37Ayah page →

Who will bring you every learned, skilled magician."

Ash-Shu'ara 26:38Ayah page →

So the magicians were assembled for the appointment of a well-known day.1

Ash-Shu'ara 26:39Ayah page →

And it was said to the people, "Will you congregate

Ash-Shu'ara 26:40Ayah page →

That we might follow the magicians if they are the predominant?"

Ash-Shu'ara 26:41Ayah page →

And when the magicians arrived, they said to Pharaoh, "Is there indeed for us a reward if we are the predominant?"

Ash-Shu'ara 26:42Ayah page →

He said, "Yes, and indeed, you will then be of those near [to me]."

Ash-Shu'ara 26:43Ayah page →

Moses said to them, "Throw whatever you will throw."

Ash-Shu'ara 26:44Ayah page →

So they threw their ropes and their staffs and said, "By the might of Pharaoh, indeed it is we who are predominant."

Ash-Shu'ara 26:45Ayah page →

Then Moses threw his staff, and at once it devoured what they falsified.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:46Ayah page →

So the magicians fell down in prostration [to Allāh].

Ash-Shu'ara 26:47Ayah page →

They said, "We have believed in the Lord of the worlds,

Ash-Shu'ara 26:48Ayah page →

The Lord of Moses and Aaron."

Ash-Shu'ara 26:49Ayah page →

[Pharaoh] said, "You believed him [i.e., Moses] before I gave you permission. Indeed, he is your leader who has taught you magic, but you are going to know. I will surely cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will surely crucify you all."

Ash-Shu'ara 26:50Ayah page →

They said, "No harm. Indeed, to our Lord we will return.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:51Ayah page →

Indeed, we aspire that our Lord will forgive us our sins because we were the first of the believers."

Ash-Shu'ara 26:52Ayah page →

And We inspired to Moses, "Travel by night with My servants; indeed, you will be pursued."

Ash-Shu'ara 26:53Ayah page →

Then Pharaoh sent among the cities gatherers1

Ash-Shu'ara 26:54Ayah page →

[And said], "Indeed, those are but a small band,

Ash-Shu'ara 26:55Ayah page →

And indeed, they are enraging us,

Ash-Shu'ara 26:56Ayah page →

And indeed, we are a cautious society..."

Ash-Shu'ara 26:57Ayah page →

So We removed them from gardens and springs

Ash-Shu'ara 26:58Ayah page →

And treasures and honorable station1 -

Ash-Shu'ara 26:59Ayah page →

Thus. And We caused to inherit it the Children of Israel.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:60Ayah page →

So they pursued them at sunrise.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:61Ayah page →

And when the two companies saw one another, the companions of Moses said, "Indeed, we are to be overtaken!"

Ash-Shu'ara 26:62Ayah page →

[Moses] said, "No! Indeed, with me is my Lord; He will guide me."

Ash-Shu'ara 26:63Ayah page →

Then We inspired to Moses, "Strike with your staff the sea," and it parted, and each portion was like a great towering mountain.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:64Ayah page →

And We advanced thereto the others [i.e., the pursuers].

Ash-Shu'ara 26:65Ayah page →

And We saved Moses and those with him, all together.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:66Ayah page →

Then We drowned the others.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:67Ayah page →

Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:68Ayah page →

And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:69Ayah page →

And recite to them the news of Abraham,

Ash-Shu'ara 26:70Ayah page →

When he said to his father and his people, "What do you worship?"

Ash-Shu'ara 26:71Ayah page →

They said, "We worship idols and remain to them devoted."

Ash-Shu'ara 26:72Ayah page →

He said, "Do they hear you when you supplicate?

Ash-Shu'ara 26:73Ayah page →

Or do they benefit you, or do they harm?"

Ash-Shu'ara 26:74Ayah page →

They said, "But we found our fathers doing thus."

Ash-Shu'ara 26:75Ayah page →

He said, "Then do you see what you have been worshipping,

Ash-Shu'ara 26:76Ayah page →

You and your ancient forefathers?

Ash-Shu'ara 26:77Ayah page →

Indeed, they are enemies to me, except the Lord of the worlds,1

Ash-Shu'ara 26:78Ayah page →

Who created me, and He [it is who] guides me.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:79Ayah page →

And it is He who feeds me and gives me drink.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:80Ayah page →

And when I am ill, it is He who cures me

Ash-Shu'ara 26:81Ayah page →

And who will cause me to die and then bring me to life

Ash-Shu'ara 26:82Ayah page →

Ash-Shu'ara 26:83Ayah page →

[And he said], "My Lord, grant me authority and join me with the righteous.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:84Ayah page →

Ash-Shu'ara 26:86Ayah page →

And do not disgrace me on the Day they are [all] resurrected -

Ash-Shu'ara 26:88Ayah page →

The Day when there will not benefit [anyone] wealth or children

Ash-Shu'ara 26:89Ayah page →

Ash-Shu'ara 26:90Ayah page →

And Paradise will be brought near [that Day] to the righteous.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:91Ayah page →

Ash-Shu'ara 26:92Ayah page →

Ash-Shu'ara 26:94Ayah page →

So they will be overturned into it [i.e., Hellfire], they and the deviators

Ash-Shu'ara 26:95Ayah page →

And the soldiers of Iblees, all together.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:96Ayah page →

They will say while they dispute therein,

"By Allāh, we were indeed in manifest error

Ash-Shu'ara 26:99Ayah page →

And no one misguided us except the criminals.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:100Ayah page →

So now we have no intercessors

Ash-Shu'ara 26:101Ayah page →

And not a devoted friend.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:102Ayah page →

Ash-Shu'ara 26:120Ayah page →

And indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is the revelation of the Lord of the worlds.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:193Ayah page →

The Trustworthy Spirit [i.e., Gabriel] has brought it down

Ash-Shu'ara 26:194Ayah page →

Upon your heart, [O Muḥammad] - that you may be of the warners

Ash-Shu'ara 26:195Ayah page →

In a clear Arabic language.

And has it not been a sign to them that it is recognized by the scholars of the Children of Israel?

Ash-Shu'ara 26:198Ayah page →

And even if We had revealed it to one among the foreigners1

Ash-Shu'ara 26:199Ayah page →

And he had recited it to them [perfectly],1 they would [still] not have been believers in it.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:200Ayah page →

Thus have We inserted it [i.e., disbelief] into the hearts of the criminals.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:201Ayah page →

They will not believe in it until they see the painful punishment.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:202Ayah page →

And it will come to them suddenly while they perceive [it] not.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:203Ayah page →

And they will say, "May we be reprieved?"

So for Our punishment are they impatient?

Ash-Shu'ara 26:205Ayah page →

Then have you considered if We gave them enjoyment for years

Ash-Shu'ara 26:206Ayah page →

And then there came to them that which they were promised?

Ash-Shu'ara 26:207Ayah page →

They would not be availed by the enjoyment with which they were provided.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:208Ayah page →

And We did not destroy any city except that it had warners

Ash-Shu'ara 26:209Ayah page →

As a reminder; and never have We been unjust.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:210Ayah page →

And the devils have not brought it [i.e., the revelation] down.1

Ash-Shu'ara 26:211Ayah page →

It is not allowable for them, nor would they be able.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:212Ayah page →

Indeed they, from [its] hearing, are removed.1

Ash-Shu'ara 26:213Ayah page →

So do not invoke1 with Allāh another deity and [thus] be among the punished.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:214Ayah page →

And warn, [O Muḥammad], your closest kindred.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:215Ayah page →

Ash-Shu'ara 26:216Ayah page →

Ash-Shu'ara 26:217Ayah page →

And rely upon the Exalted in Might, the Merciful,

Ash-Shu'ara 26:218Ayah page →

Who sees you when you arise1

Ash-Shu'ara 26:219Ayah page →

And your movement among those who prostrate.1

Ash-Shu'ara 26:220Ayah page →

Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:221Ayah page →

Shall I inform you upon whom the devils descend?

Ash-Shu'ara 26:222Ayah page →

They descend upon every sinful liar.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:223Ayah page →

They pass on what is heard,1 and most of them are liars.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:224Ayah page →

And the poets - [only] the deviators follow them.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:225Ayah page →

Do you not see that in every valley they roam1

Ash-Shu'ara 26:226Ayah page →

And that they say what they do not do? -

Ash-Shu'ara 26:227Ayah page →

Except those [poets] who believe and do righteous deeds and remember Allāh often and defend [the Muslims]1 after they were wronged. And those who have wronged are going to know to what [kind of] return they will be returned.
